CHIPPING'S intrepid hotelier Janet Simpson, proprietor of the Gibbon Bridge, returned home on Sunday after an exhausting five-day trek through the Peruvian Andes to the lost city of Machu Picchu. Miss Simpson, accompanied by friend Karen Jones, travelled with 80 other people


raising money for the disabled charity Scope. They hiked through sub-tropical vegeta­


tion, cloud forest and finally steep barren slopes as the trail wound its way through the sacred Urubama Valley and surrounding mountains, reaching an altitude of 4,750m. “It was an awesome journey, extremely


hard on the knees and body, but one that I will never forget.

A total of £335 was raised for Christie’s Against Cancer when organiser Mrs Jean McLean staged a raffle at the White Bull Hotel in Gisburn.

WI trip Members of the WI will be heading out of Hurst Green this month for their regu­ lar meeting. The ladies are visiting Browsholme Hall on Thursday, June 24th, before enjoying a meal at the Red Pump Inn in Bashall Eaves. Members are asked to meet at the village cross at 6-30 p.m.


Open gardens If you need some inspiring ideas for your garden you need not travel far, as the


gates to Huntingdon Hall will be open later this month as part of the Open Gardens Scheme. The garden of the hall, located at the top end of Hunting­ don Hall Lane, will be open between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 26th, and Sunday the 27th. Entry costs £3 and the WI will be sup­ plying refreshments.
