Jubilee golf classic raises over £13,000 for charity
by Adrian Capstick
A DAY to remember was had by all who attended Stony hurst Park Golf Club's Silver I Jubilee Charity Golf Classic
I and Banquet. Several teams contested the
1 event in aid of Stonyhurst Chari ties and the Wooden Spoon Soci ety - the charity of British rugby - and a to ta l of £13,000 was raised.
The competition was nominat
ed as one of the Wooden Spoon's regional qualifiers for their national golf championship. And taking the honours on the
day was Emma Greenwood's team that featured co-organiser Richard Greenwood, Stonyhurst's Mark Young and Ian Barton. Scratch handicap player Mark
played out of his skin to book a place at the Belfry for the nation al final in October, which, if they prove successful, would mean a
trip to contest the international super-final in Florida. Unfortunately none of the pre
arranged England international rugby celebrities were able to' attend due to unforeseen circum stances, but former Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Alan Kelly and Irish rugby player Hugo McNeil joined the action to par take in what proved to be a very successful day. The after-dinner speeches were undertaken at the post-course
champagne reception by Profes sor David Purdie and Radio Lan cashire presenter Norman Prince. Both men spoke eloquently
with an inexhaustible fund of anecdotes to the entertainment of all those attending. Stonyhurst GO would like to
give thanks to all those in the local community who gave their support to the day, as the pro ceedings far exceeded all original fundraising targets set by the club.

DESPITE the poor weather in the afternoon, the second Mytton Fold North Region Pro-Am was a resounding success, with 34 teams taking
part. Among this year's
professionals was
Gordon J. Brand, a former Ryder Cup player. The condition of the
course prompted much praise from both professionals and visiting amateurs and was a credit to head greenkeeper, Patrick
Maher and his staff. Tim Maxwell
(Mottram Hall) equalled the professional course record of 67 to take first place and the £1,000 first prize, and also lead home the winning team of Joe
Cross (Mytton Fold), Zac Foley and Jordan Cooke (both from Clitheroe Golf Club). Second place went to
Mytton Fold members David Colley, Craig Taylor and club secretary Douglas Woodburn, playing
with professional Tim Rastall (Mottram Hall), with Simon Pilbin, Neil Osliffe, Steve Shoreman and professional Paul Carman (Huddersfield) taking third place. The ladies’ prize was
