THREE of England’s Rugby World Cup winners will be back in the Ribble Valley later in the sum mer - swapping rugby boots for golf shoes to raise money for charity. Stonyhurst old boys Will Green
wood, Iain Balshaw and Kyran Bracken head a list of celebrities who have m “ e a date at Stony hurst Park Golf Club in early July. And they are aiming to raise
thousands for charity. Although the golf course has
existed for well over a century, the club playing there is celebrating 25 years this year. And to mark that anniversary,
the founder members are organis ing the Silver Jubilee Charity Golf Classic.

considerable amount of money for the college’s own charities as well as the Wooden Spoon Society - the official charity of British rugby. The involvement of the Wooden
Spoonists is crucial to the success of the event as they have nominated the day as one of their regional qualifiers for a national golf cham pionship.
And the winners at Stonyhurst
on Friday, July 9th, will go through to the all-expenses-paid national final to be held at The Belfry later in the year, with the chance of a trip to Florida as the main prize. A number of sporting celebrities
have pledged their support, includ ing former England rugby captain Bill Beaumont, former Lancashire cricketer and now county president Jack Simmonds, and former Eng-
land football captain Trevor Cherry. Others in action on the Stony

hurst fairways that day are set to include broadcaster Martin Hen- field, Houghton Weaver Norman Prince and a group of golfing MPs. The golf side of the day is a vir
tual sell-out and will be followed by a champagne reception, banquet and evening’s entertainment. The whole day has already
at tracted sponsorship from Thwaites Brewery and Persimmon Homes (North West), but a variety of other sponsorship deals are avail able, as are tables at the evening banquet.

Elizabeth’s Olympic trial!
CLITHEROE Dolphins and Bobcats swimmer Elizabeth Highton com peted at the Olympic trials recently. And the 13-year-old fin
ished an impressive 30th in the 100m backstroke with a time of 1.08.35. Elizabeth was swim
ming in a category tha t British Swimming Nation al Performance Director Bill Sweetenham described as one of Britain's strongest events, th a t eventually produced two qualifiers aged 22 and 25. Elizabeth’s performance was made all the more
impressive when you con sider that the qualifiers from this event are expect ed to make the Olympic final, and there are high hopes of an Olympic medal. As a result, Elizabeth is
now ranked third in the country for her aee croup.

Dolphins swim to second spot
■CLITHEROE Dolphins youngest swimmers trav elled to Colne for the sec ond Micro League Gala of the season, and despite finding the opposition tough going, came away runners up to Southport. The local swimmers
scored 117 points in com parison to Southport's winning total of 149, pip ping near neighbours Colne into third spot by 14 points. Individual winners on
the day proved to be nine- year-old Isaac Banki- Williamson in the 25m backstroke, Jacob Abra hams in the 10-year-old 50 metres breaststroke and fellow team-mate Thomas Carter in the 50 metres backstroke and freestyle. Kara Singleton gave a winning performance in
ANN PRIOR took the High Handicap Trophy at Whalley Golf Club, with a total of 39 points. Wendy Green was sec
ond a point further further back, while Agnes Seery claimed third place with 34 points. The rest of the local golf
the 11-year-olds’ 50 metres freestyle, as did Alex Bibby in the 50 metres breaststroke. And completing the
individual honours was Hayleigh Jones with a win in the 50 metres freestyle. Clitheroe's only team
win of the event saw the nine-year-old boys team of Isaac Banki-Williamson, Benedict Swift, Oliver Roberts and Harry Cross- ley take the 4x25 metres freestyle race. NORTH WEST
