Subaru BRZ
The BRZ sticks out like a sore thumb in a Subaru showroom as it’s a completely diff erent prospect to everything else the company makes. It’s a very sporty and low slung two-door ‘2+2’ coupe powered by a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. Subaru designed and developed the BRZ in conjunction with Toyota, so it’s eff ectively a twin for the Toyota GT86 and there’s very little diff erence between them. That means the BRZ is pliant enough for everyday use, yet huge fun when the road opens up thanks to its low weight and quick responses. One for those that love to drive.

Subaru Levorg
The Levorg is a strange car that, objectively, makes no sense at all, and yet we can’t help but love it. It takes the form of a mid-sized estate with restrained but distinctly sporty styling, including a sizeable bonnet scoop and twin exhaust outlets. Under the bonnet is a turbocharged 1.6-litre ‘boxer’ petrol engine producing a modest 170hp, four-wheel drive and a CVT automatic gearbox, too. But Subaru has obviously tuned the chassis for fun, so this is as close as you can get to the old Impreza Turbo in terms of driving enjoyment. Sadly, it’s very expensive to buy and run.

Subaru Outback
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Outback 2.0D SE
Some of our readers may remember the classy Subaru Legacy saloon. It spawned an estate variant and that, in time, sired the Outback, a more rugged and elevated version that off ers all the go-anywhere ability of an SUV without the up-high appearance and image. Now the Outback is a standalone model and it’s one of the best in the Subaru range, if quite expensive to buy. In fairness, it feels worth the outlay with a high quality fi nish, good refi nement and lots of space and equipment inside. The only engine is a 2.0-litre diesel, four-wheel drive is standard of course and buyers can choose between manual and CVT automatic transmissions.
