Fiat 500X
When the 500X was fi rst launched, Fiat made a hilarious television advert in which a little blue pill fell into the fuel tank of a regular 500, creating the tougher, bigger 500X. Entertaining and easy to understand, even if the X has little in common with the standard Fiat 500. Nonetheless, the 500X is probably one of Fiat’s best cars. It’s good to drive, other than a few refi nement issues at speed on the motorway, has plenty of space inside, is well made, good to look at and comes with a decent line-up of engine and transmission options. Oddly, given that it’s already a crossover, it can be had in a more rugged looking ‘Cross’ variant.

Fiat 500L
The Fiat 500L shares very little with its little 500-badged hatchback sibling, other than a vague design resemblance, perhaps. It’s a curious car that is part crossover and part MPV and the updated range is set to include Urban, Cross and Wagon derivatives, the latter with up to seven seats thanks to rather ungainly extra bodywork to the rear. The regular 500L has decent space in it and it all feels well-made too, but we reckon Fiat has trouble fi nding buyers that understand what it’s all about, especially with the 500X crossover also in the line-up.

Fiat Tipo
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Tipo saloon Easy 1.6 diesel 120hp
Fiat off ers its C-segment Tipo model in three body styles: a fi ve-door hatchback, four-door saloon and an estate called Station Wagon. They’re reasonably good-looking and spacious and very well-equipped for the money, though don’t expect the Tipo to stand up to comparison with class-leaders such as the Volkswagen Golf or Opel Astra in terms of refi nement or quality. Same story on the road, where the Tipo is perfectly competent and adequately composed and stable, but it doesn’t lead the pack in engaging dynamics nor comfort. In fact, the Tipo doesn’t stand out in any one area as special, but isn’t a bad all-rounder.
