opel LClass eader Opel Astra

The Opel Astra is unquestionably one of the most underrated hatchbacks in the segment. Like other rivals, it gets overshadowed by volume sellers like the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf, but the Opel drives every bit as well as the best in the segment. Buyers can choose from a fi ve-door hatchback or estate (referred to as Sports Tourer), along with a good selection of engines. The 1.0-litre 105hp EcoTec

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Karl SE

petrol unit is especially good and delivers plenty of power. It scores well on the emissions and fuel consumption fronts also, but the Astra’s diesel off ering is equally good. On the move, the Astra has excellent handling and a suspension setup that copes well with Irish roads. Opel continues to off er an Astra Saloon, but it’s worth noting that this is the previous generation car, which can’t match the latest hatchback’s qualities.

Opel Karl

The Opel Karl, named after the son of the company founder, is one of the more surprising models in the doggedly competitive supermini class. There is very little to separate cars like the Hyundai i10 and Volkswagen up!, but the Opel makes good use of its interior space, providing up to 1,013 litres of cargo volume with its rear seats folded. As well as space, Opel hasn’t skimped on the materials it uses throughout the cabin, and the Karl looks and feels far from cheap, although the price refl ects this. Its 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine sees it zip along with ease, though it does take a bit more time to get up to speed. Overall this is a refi ned car with a grown-up feel to it.

Opel Adam

Some small cars try to be fun and appealing to younger buyers; just look at the Fiat 500 for example. In the Adam, Opel has tried to recreate that winning formula. Sadly, it hasn’t pulled off such a masterstroke, and it just doesn’t have the same magnetism of others. The standard model off ers an almost dizzying array of colour and wheel combinations, while a choice of automatic and manual transmissions is available, too. The crossover-styled Adam Rocks version gets plenty of black plastic cladding, but also gets a suspension upgrade, making it a better car to drive. For the speed demons, there’s an Adam S with its 150hp 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine. It may be a pocket rocket, but it’ll also empty your pocket between its high costs and thirst for fuel.
