The Mondeo was once a benchmark in the family car segment, but the arrival of newer, more upmarket competition has seen it slip down the ranks. The current model hasn’t enjoyed the same success as its predecessors, and it wasn’t helped by its late introduction to the market. It does have a roomy cabin, but build quality - even on higher grade models - doesn’t match its European and Asian counterparts. While older Mondeos were praised for their entertaining handling, the current car is designed with comfort in mind, although that does mean you can cover long distances with ease. If you’re looking for a compact crossover, you’re spoiled for choice, as nearly every mainstream manufacturer now off ers a model in this burgeoning segment. Unfortunately, that means the Ford EcoSport is facing an uphill struggle against a lot of talented rivals. This is the third iteration of the EcoSport to be off ered since it fi rst went on sale in 2013, but it still doesn’t look as smart or is as good to drive as many rivals, feeling more like a model that was cobbled together to fi ll a void in Ford’s range. It was originally designed to be sold in South America, and while it might work there, it falls well short of the mark compared to its more polished European market competitors and it’s expensive in comparison, too.

Ford Kuga
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Kuga ST-Line 2.0 TDCi 150 AWD
Styling tweaks and some engine upgrades have kept the Ford Kuga fresh, and the range has expanded with the arrival of the sporty ST-Line and upmarket Vignale versions. The latter is quite pricey, but the ST-Line gives the Kuga added appeal. The Kuga’s cabin features a large touchscreen with Ford’s SYNC infotainment system and smartphone connectivity, while on the road the Kuga delivers a decent ride while being quite good to drive. The large boot and the option of an electrically operated tailgate boost its practicality, too. The engine range focuses on frugality rather than outright performance, but the 2.0-litre diesel engines deliver plenty of pulling power. The choice of automatic or manual transmissions and front- or all-wheel drive gives buyers plenty of variety within the Kuga range.
