OUR PICK OF THE RANGE GLC 250 d AMG Line 4Matic

LClass Mercedes-Benz GLA

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE GLA 220 d 4Matic Urban

An update to the Mercedes GLA in 2017 sharpened up its image and it’s now quite an appealing compact SUV. Saying that, it’s more of a raised-up hatchback than something you’d consider going off the beaten track in, and its appearance really depends on which trim level you choose. Nonetheless, for not a lot more money than the Mercedes A-Class it’s based on, the GLA looks more substantial, has more interior space and is more comfortable on the road. It’s worth spending a bit of money on it to get a more powerful diesel engine and perhaps even shell out on 4Matic four-wheel drive, too.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE GLE 250 d 4Matic

eader Mercedes-Benz GLC

In today’s SUV-mad car market, it’s inconceivable that Mercedes would not sell its mid-sized off ering, but that’s what happened with the GLC’s predecessor, which was never made in right-hand drive. Thankfully, Mercedes remedied that for the GLC, which we think is one of the very best cars in its segment. It looks great inside and out, is smooth and comfortable to drive and surprisingly well- priced. All versions come with 4Matic four-wheel drive and only the seriously powerful AMG models use petrol engines. The entry-level 220 d engine is fi ne, but we like the extra go of the 250 d, while buyers can choose between a conventional fi ve-door SUV shape and the GLC Coupe, which looks sportier, but still has fi ve doors and more than acceptable interior space.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE GLS 350 d 4Matic

Mercedes-Benz GLE

The Mercedes GLE is one of the oldest cars in the range now, and it shows inside. However, it’s still an accomplished SUV, with surprisingly good road manners and a perfectly judged automatic transmission. The GLE also has a simply massive interior, with stretching room for fi ve adults and a big boot, but the fl ipside of that is the lack of a seven-seat option, limiting its potential appeal for larger (and well-heeled) families. The entry-level diesel engine is all that’s needed, though there’s also a V6 diesel for more performance and the usual profl igate petrol models further up the price ladder.

Mercedes-Benz GLS

If you’re familiar with the relatively new Mercedes naming convention, you’ll know that the GLS is an SUV of S-Class proportions. That sums it up well, as it’s a luxury car fi rst and foremost, with space for seven in its well-appointed interior. The GLS sells in very low numbers in Ireland though, probably because of its pricing, but also because of its limited line-up. There’s a single diesel option (powerful, but not especially cheap to run) and then three extravagant V8-engined petrol models that may be needlessly fast, but they’re also lovely to amble around in.
