Toyota C-HR
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE C-HR 1.2T Luna Sport
As statements of intent go, Toyota’s C-HR (Coupe High-Rider) could not have been much bolder. And, thankfully, the C-HR is engineered almost as well as it is designed. The edgy, distinctive exterior and the company’s best interior by some distance hide a chassis that’s hugely rewarding for the keener driver. The C-HR is at its best with the 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine, although – as is traditional for this manufacturer – a 1.8-litre petrol-electric hybrid is also off ered. There are a few problems, like rear visibility, the light levels in the back seats and a few interior fi nishing niggles, but otherwise this is a brilliant, funky crossover.

Toyota Aygo
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Aygo 1.0 VVT-i manual x-play+
The Toyota Aygo shares its underpinnings with the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108. Toyota was brave in styling the Aygo’s face, taking a Manga (Japanese comics) robot as inspiration to leave its smallest model with a large X dominating the front of the car. The Aygo further ups the hip quotient by coming in a range of bright colours with contrast roof fi nishes, while the small but well-packaged interior is also eye-catching. Available in three- and fi ve-door bodies, the Aygo’s biggest weakness is its gutless 69hp 1.0-litre engine; this is a car crying out for a turbocharged unit. Other than that, the Aygo is a likeable city machine, if not the best vehicle in its class.
Toyota Yaris
The Yaris is the smallest hybrid model in the Toyota range. Some tweaks to the car’s looks in mid-2017 kept things looking fresh, and the supermini has a bit more character now, courtesy of some colour options that include a contrasting black roof and a top-spec Sol model. The Hybrid version comes as an automatic, with a 1.5-litre petrol engine. While it isn’t fast, it can return low fuel consumption fi gures. Urban dwellers that stick to low-speed driving will benefi t most. Other engine options include 1.0- and 1.5-litre petrol and a 1.4-litre diesel. Toyota remains one of the few brands in this segment to off er both three- and fi ve-door versions, although engine choice in the three-door is very limited.
