KIA

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Stonic 1.4 K2 petrol

Kia Stonic

If you’re in the market for a compact crossover, you are spoiled for choice at the moment. One of the latest arrivals is the Kia Stonic and, on design alone, it’s sure to win over buyers. Chunky looks and a variety of colour combos with contrasting roof designs provide appeal, but beneath

the looks is a car that drives and handles well. Nimble steering makes it feel at home in town and, while the ride is fi rm, it does soak up a good deal of what Irish roads can throw at it. Not only is it well-priced, but the Stonic also features good levels of standard equipment across the range.

Kia Picanto

The Picanto is the baby of the Kia range, but the latest version of this pint-sized city car has many of the qualities of Kia’s larger models. On the outside, the styling is characterful, for a start. More importantly, cabin space is maximised and the materials are better than what’s typical of the class. Most models get the 67hp 1.0-litre petrol engine, but a more powerful 84hp 1.2 MPI features in the range-topping version. With either engine, the Picanto is fun to drive, provided you stick to urban environs.

Kia Rio

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Rio 1.25 EX petrol

If cars were people, we’d all feel sorry for the Kia Rio. It’s often forgotten in the packed B-segment hatchback class of superminis as it’s up against such established nameplates as the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo, Toyota Yaris and Renault Clio - and that’s just for starters. Nonetheless, the Rio has a lot going for it, beginning with its understatedly handsome styling and spacious boot. Buyers will undoubtedly be drawn by the seven-year warranty (which means the Rio is actually very reliable rather than you’ll need the warranty), but on the road it’s a little disappointing, if comfortable for the most part. A sensible purchase rather than one you’ll get excited about, basically.
