OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Civic Smart Plus 1.0 VTEC Turbo

Honda Civic

The Civic is one of Honda’s best-known cars and it competes in the same class as the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. Off ered solely as a fi ve-door hatchback, the latest Civic focuses on driving fun and technology and it has a distinctive look that will certainly divide opinion. At the time of writing, the

only engines off ered are petrol-powered, and the 1.0-litre option makes a great alternative to diesel; it’s smooth, more powerful than you’d expect, and economical if you take it easy. At the other end of the scale is the hardcore Civic Type R hot hatch, (right), which isn’t for the fainthearted…

Honda Jazz

As fi ve-door hatchbacks go, the Honda Jazz is one of the most deceptive on the market. It’s a packaging tour de force, as it off ers a great deal of interior space and versatility in a car that’s small enough to squeeze into tight spaces. It doesn’t look particularly striking – unless you go for one of the bright colour options - but the Jazz is a car that will prove to be versatile and reliable. Honda is generous with its standard equipment, too, and the build quality looks and feels solid. Power from the 1.3-litre petrol engine is enough for the Jazz, although we’d recommend avoiding the slow and noisy automatic CVT version.

Honda CR-V

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE CR-V 1.6 i-DTEC ES Sport

The handsome Honda CR-V has been around for a while, but it remains one of the most complete fi ve-seat SUVs if you rate comfort, space and durability highly. The 1.6-litre turbocharged diesel engine strikes a good balance between economy and performance, and it’s the one that we’d go for over the petrol engines. It comes with the choice of front- or all-wheel drive, although if you’re looking to lower your running costs, and you don’t need four-wheel drive, the former falls under the lower A4 tax band. The driving position is good, too, and the CR-V has a soft ride that makes it comfortable, although it’s not especially sporty to drive.
