BMW 4 Series Strange one this, but BMW prices its two-door 4 Series Coupe and fi ve-door 4 Series Gran Coupe identically, so you just choose an engine and then whichever body style suits you best. Despite the extra rear doors, the Gran Coupe is no larger, but we’d have it for the extra versatility if off ers – and it’s hardly any less desirable looking, is it? There’s also a 4 Series Convertible with a folding hardtop, though we’re not big fans of that. As with all other BMWs, buyers can choose from a wide range of petrol and diesel engines, culminating in the ballistic M4 versions of the Coupe and Convertible. Do the design justice and go for one with a little more performance than the norm…
BMW 6 Series
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE 640d M Sport Gran Coupe
There are four body styles for the 6 Series line-up, though the Gran Turismo model used to be badged as a 5 Series, so it’s quite a diff erent beast to the others, focusing on comfort and masses of space over sporting prowess. We don’t like how it looks… The 6 Series Coupe, Convertible and Gran Coupe, however, are lovely. The Convertible looks out of place in Ireland and even if the Gran Coupe was more expensive than the two-door model (it’s not; it’s the same price), we’d go for that, as it’s a stunning car inside and out that marries luxury saloon refi nement with a fun-to-drive chassis. There’s no need for the range-topping M6 versions though, as the 640d is fast enough for anyone, while keeping running costs down.

BMW has always presented its range-topping saloon, the 7 Series, as the luxury car for those that love to drive, but the fact of the matter is that most luxury saloon buyers don’t really care about driving dynamics, instead focusing on refi nement, comfort and technology. Hence, for this sixth generation of the nameplate, that’s what BMW focused on, and it really is an exceptionally luxurious car in which to travel. There’s a long wheelbase version for those that need to carry important people in the back and a smooth, quiet plugin hybrid variant to salve their consciences as they waft along.
