OUR PICK OF THE RANGE ix20 Deluxe 1.4 diesel

Hyundai Santa Fe

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Santa Fe Executive 4WD

Hyundai’s Santa Fe has had the seven-seat sub-premium SUV segment almost to itself for quite some time (except perhaps for its cousin, the Kia Sorento), but that situation is changing rapidly as rivals launch effi cient new cars, including the Peugeot 5008 and Skoda Kodiaq. Against those, the Santa Fe looks a little old-fashioned and cumbersome and the line-up has no petrol option for buyers. However, take the Santa Fe for a drive and you’ll still be impressed by its refi nement, its comfortable and spacious cabin and the eff ortless performance from its 2.2-litre diesel engine. There’s still life left in the old dog…

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Ioniq Electric

Hyundai ix20

Despite the ‘x’ in the name, the Hyundai ix20 is no SUV; it’s a compact fi ve-seat people carrier with decent interior space to accommodate up to fi ve. A design refresh for 2017 kept it looking modern, though it’s likely to remain a relatively rare car in Ireland, as hinted at by the availability of a single trim level. Engine options include 1.4-litre diesel or petrol and a thirsty 1.6-litre petrol alternative with an automatic transmission. Pricing is on the same level as that of the Hyundai i30, which is a far nicer car, if a little less versatile. Our money would go on the i30 Tourer instead.

Editor’s Choice

Hyundai Ioniq Rather than add electric propulsion to an existing car in the range, Hyundai developed a brand-new platform, optimised from the start to accept a combination of electric power and conventional internal combustion engines. The result is the modern-looking Ioniq range, a fi ve-door hatchback that rivals the likes of the Toyota Prius. The Hyundai

Ioniq is off ered in Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid formats, plus an all-electric variant. The latter is our favourite, but won’t suit those with a long commute or hours on the motorway every day due to its range limitations (a claimed 280km). All versions are smooth, refi ned and spacious inside with plenty of equipment as standard.
