Audi Q3 Audi Q2


The Audi Q2 is set to be one of the German company’s stars this coming year, as it’s bang on the zeitgeist of high-quality, compact crossovers. It’s not as big inside as the Audi Q3, but it’s not far off , and we’d argue that it’s a much more appealing package with more rear seat space than you might expect. Design-wise, it’s far more interesting, too, inside and out, with plenty of fl ourishes, such as the hidden interior ambient lighting. On the road, it’s fun to drive and refi ned for the segment, if not quite as quiet as larger Audi models. Stick with the excellent petrol options unless you spend a lot of time on the motorway.

The arrival of the Audi Q2 in the line-up has cast a shadow over its bigger sibling, the Q3, making it feel quite dated in comparison. In fact, unless you need the additional space of the Q3 (and there’s not as much in it as you might think), we’d suggest that the Q2 is the superior car. The Q3 begins to make more sense if you drive longer distances or if you need four-wheel drive at times, and it’s a more refi ned car on the road. The dashboard looks much older than most of the rest of the Audi line-up’s, though. Most versions off ered are powered by one of the company’s 2.0 TDI engines, though the 1.4 TFSI petrol alternative is worth a look for those based in town.

The Audi Q5 SUV has been one of the best-sellers in its segment across Europe since it was fi rst launched in 2008, so the German fi rm did nothing drastic when reinventing it for its second iteration in 2016. The current car is subtly sharper and larger than the old one, but it’s still identifi able as a Q5. We think the market would have been receptive to a more dramatic departure. Nonetheless, the new car has taken an appreciable step forward in terms of refi nement and interior quality. It has, hands down, the best cabin in the sector, with tactile switchgear and loads of space for fi ve adults. Stick with diesel in this one.

Audi Q7


In many ways, the Q7 embodies the current Audi philosophy. It is a car that features a contemporary design that is luxurious in its fi nish and refi ned on the move. The Q7 also comes with all the latest technology both for keeping your passengers occupied and safe. On the road it handles surprisingly well, signifi cantly sharper than many of the larger seven-seat SUVs on the market. Pay attention to wheel sizes though, as the larger 20- and 21-inch alloys drive up emissions and aff ect the motor tax rate. The range-topping SQ7 has performance that will leave almost any car for dust while consuming a combined 7.2 litres/100km. For those seeking a Q7 that is even cheaper to run, the plug-in hybrid Q7 e-tron has emissions of just 48g/km and can cover up to 56 kilometres using only its battery. This model is only available as a fi ve-seat version though.
