Suzuki Baleno
The Suzuki Baleno is unlikely to win any beauty pageants, but don’t let its exterior styling put you off . What the bodywork hides is a car that is genuinely one of the best we’ve driven in the last 12 months. Its interior is best described as functional, but every button looks and feels as if it will still be working perfectly well in two decades’ time, while cabin space is excellent when compared to other superminis at this price point. Petrol power comes in the form of a 1.0-litre Boosterjet with 111hp or a slightly larger but less powerful 90hp 1.2-litre unit. The Baleno is pleasant to drive, with just enough softness in the suspension to keep the balance of comfort and composure.

Suzuki Vitara
Since its debut in 2015, the Suzuki Vitara has remained one of the best all-round crossovers in its segment. The mix of aff ordability, good equipment levels and a range of colour combinations make this one of the more interesting models out there. In the right spec, it looks more expensive than it is and it drives well. Crossovers can often seem like little more than a box-ticking exercise for some brands, but the Vitara feels well engineered. It comes with the choice of a 1.6-litre diesel and 1.6-litre petrol engines, with the former also available with all-wheel drive. Standard equipment levels are reasonable, even on the base model; from mid-level upwards there’s plenty of kit on off er. Suzuki also off ers the Vitara S, a sportier looking car with a good level of spec, although there’s only one engine, the 1.4-litre Boosterjet petrol.

Suzuki SX4 S-Cross
Suzuki has no shortage of crossovers and SUVs in its line-up, and the SX4 S-Cross rolls in at the top of the family tree. While only marginally larger than the Vitara, it has a more restrained look, save for that large chrome grille. Put up against some of the stronger rivals it faces, like the Nissan Qashqai and SEAT Ateca, the Suzuki struggles to compete. It isn’t as spacious in the rear and the quality of materials used inside lags behind. More positively, the SX4 S-Cross has a competitive pricing structure, and it feels robust enough to cope with whatever you can throw at it. Go for an SZ-T model and you’ll get plenty of equipment, while the price remains reasonable. Just the one engine is available, a 1.0-litre Boosterjet petrol unit, but don’t let its small size put you off - it’s a great little engine with enough power to pull the S-Cross along nicely.
