OUR PICK OF THE RANGE X5 xDrive30d SE
The BMW X5 is one of the large SUVs often associated with property developers in our last economic boom, and it’ll be replaced by an all-new one within two years, but regardless, it remains one of the best-to-drive cars in its class. Actually, that’s only the case if you stay away from the xDrive40e version, a plugin hybrid that supposedly comes with low running costs, but is not at all good to drive away from the city centre. There are high-performance diesel options and even a 575hp V8 petrol X5 M option, but the xDrive30d does it all. Inside, it’s spacious and well- made, if now lagging its rivals in terms of technology.

Those that like the look of the BMW X6 (designed to be the sporty alternative to the X5 SUV) don’t have a lot of choice, as it is not a car in high demand. Money-no-object, there’s the X6 M50d and V8-engined xDrive50i variants, plus the insanely rapid X6 M, but most will stick with the ‘30d’ or ‘40d’ models, as they off er plenty of performance from their 3.0-litre diesel engine while not costing the earth to run. The X6 divides opinion with its oversized coupe design, but there’s no denying its physics-defying dynamic ability in the corners. We’d still give it a swerve in favour of the BMW X5, though.
