Alfa Romeo Stelvio

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is one SUV that really stands out from the crowd. It remains unmistakably an Alfa Romeo, but under that svelte bodywork is a chassis that is good enough to rival the best in the segment. All but two variants off er all-wheel drive, and all feature a slick eight-speed automatic transmission. The Stelvio has a good level of standard equipment including a power tailgate and 8.8-inch infotainment system. Inside, the

cabin looks and feels well designed with a fi nish that is likely to exceed most buyers’ expectations. The sensible will be drawn to the 180hp 2.2 JTD diesel, an engine that provides ample power and feels well suited to the automatic transmission. For the driving enthusiasts, it must be the 280hp turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine, though. It delivers a more involving and exciting drive and is something of a halfway house to the bonkers Stelvio Quadrifoglio range-topper.

Alfa Romeo MiTo

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE MiTo 0.9 TwinAir Super

After nearly a decade on sale, the Alfa Romeo MiTo never quite lived up to its purpose of rivalling the Audi A1 and MINI Hatch. The three-door- only body style remains a limiting factor, and now its styling just doesn’t cut it when compared to others in the segment. Nonetheless, more recent updates have brought higher quality materials to the cabin, and there are some decent engines from which to choose. The sensible and cheapest to run option is the 1.3 JTD diesel. A more characterful 0.9-litre TwinAir petrol engine blends punchy performance with fuel-sipping capabilities while the 140hp 1.4-litre petrol engine is only available with an automatic transmission.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta

The Giulietta may be getting on in years, but in the right specifi cation, it’s still a handsome C-segment hatchback. Once you get past the looks, this Alfa runs out of ideas to keep it competitive against much fresher competition. The mostly diesel engine range scores well in fuel economy and emissions, though, making the Giulietta motor tax-friendly. All models get Hill Hold Control, a fi ve-inch infotainment system with Bluetooth and DAB radio and 60/40 split-folding rear seats. Mid-level ‘Super’ models gain cruise control and rear parking sensors while the range-topping ‘Super Sport’ benefi ts from sports suspension, larger 17-inch alloy wheels and other sporty add-ons.
