Volkswagen T-Roc
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE T-Roc Design 1.0 TSI
When Volkswagen management admits to the possibility that the new T-Roc will become its best-selling car, you know it’s an important one. This is the company’s new crossover, sitting below the Tiguan in the line-up and built on the same platform as that and the Volkswagen Golf. It is styled, however, in a far more daring manner, inside and out, while retaining all the quality and interior ambience that VW buyers have grown to expect. It has plenty of connectivity on-board and is also great to drive, with a wide range of petrol and diesel options and even the option of four-wheel drive. Could well be crowned the class leader once the dust settles.

Volkswagen up!
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Move up! 1.0 fi ve-door
Irish car buyers traditionally shun the city car class in favour of slightly bigger superminis, which means the Volkswagen up! competes in a very tight space for sales. That’s refl ected by a small range, all models powered by a very modest 60hp 1.0-litre petrol engine. It is arguably the coolest and most desirable car in the sector thanks to the appeal of the big VW badge on the bonnet and simple, contemporary lines, though it is let down a tad by rear seat access and space. Nonetheless, for two, the up! is a lovely thing with a great chassis and the ability to shine even when outside city limits.
Volkswagen Polo
The all-new Volkswagen Polo hits Irish roads in 2018, and it’s so good that some people may consider whether they should buy it over the larger Golf. The Polo has grown, and its looks are sharper than ever. Crucially, it has that big-car feel to it when you’re at the wheel. The driving characteristics make it feel every bit the premium supermini that it is, and its new and smaller petrol engines are the stars of the show. Volkswagen’s decision to only off er a fi ve-door body isn’t a limiting factor, as this version has long been more popular than the three-door. Even better news is that Volkswagen will offi cially off er the Polo GTI in Ireland. This 200hp hot hatch should go down well with enthusiasts, although its price is set to be close to that of the Golf GTI.
