OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Stinger 2.2 diesel

Kia Stinger

Now here’s a massive departure for Kia; it’s called the Stinger, and it takes the shape of a fi ve-door fastback with coupe-like styling and rear-wheel drive. This, in essence, is Kia’s attempt to move upmarket. We love the looks, the classy interior and how it drives down the road (its dynamics do the design proud), but we suspect that Kia will struggle to convince buyers in the market for a BMW or Audi to go for this instead. The launch car is powered by a 3.3-litre petrol-fuelled V6, after all, though a more sensible diesel variant arrives in late spring.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Optima 1.7 CRDi 6MT Platinum

Kia Optima Kia Soul

As crossovers go, the Kia Soul’s marmite styling may divide opinion, but it certainly stands out from the crowd. Beneath all that is a more conventional setup that drives well and provides a comfortable ride. Just the one engine is off ered - a 1.6-litre diesel - and it gives reasonable fuel economy, but isn’t the cheapest to tax. Its quirky shape provides decent space inside and while it’s not the best value car in the segment it does come well-equipped as just one version is available. The Soul is a bold choice compared to the more sensible rivals like the Opel Mokka X or Peugeot 2008.

Since being updated a couple of years ago, the Kia Optima remains one of the most stylish cars in the D-segment saloon market. It has plenty of presence, and its size leaves a reasonable degree of room inside for front and rear passengers as well as a 510-litre boot. Although only one engine is available, there are three trim grades to choose from, including a sportier ‘GT Line’ model. The seven-speed automatic is only available on mid-level ‘Platinum’ grade, though it is smooth in its operation and more tax-friendly than the previous model’s six-speed unit. The Optima’s ride is well-damped and it’s well insulated from road noise, too, making it particularly adept at covering long distances comfortably. Kia also has a ‘Sportswagon’ estate and plans to introduce plug-in hybrid versions in the near future.
