BMW 2 Series Coupe/Convertible
There are very few small premium convertibles on the market these days, but the BMW 2 Series Convertible is the best, mixing elegant styling with engaging driving dynamics and a great range of engines. Not that any of that matters in Ireland, of course, because nobody buys open-topped cars here, for obvious reasons. Thankfully, the 2 Series Coupe is all of the above, with a solid roof overhead. Even the modestly powered entry- level petrol and diesel versions are fun to drive, but the stars of the range are the M240i and the driver-focused BMW M2. Money-no-object, we’d take the M2, but the M240i is a better all-rounder.

BMW 3 Series The BMW 3 Series needs no introduction and it continues to epitomise the compact sports saloon with its agile rear-drive chassis. It has subtly altered over recent years though, to focus more on comfort, refi nement and technology. Sure, you can still buy a tyre- shredding M3 and other petrol variants, but the 2.0-litre diesel is its heartland. Saying that, the newer 330e is making inroads.

It’s a plugin hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and our taxation and grants set-up make it cheaper to buy than the entry-level diesel. Yet it’s far more powerful. Well worth a look. As is the stylish BMW 3 Series Touring estate for those that need more space. The oddball 3 Series Gran Turismo has almost as much room in it as that, in a fi ve-door hatchback body style focused on comfort.
