OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Fiesta ST-Line 1.0 EcoBoost

Ford Fiesta

The Fiesta has long been a popular choice among Irish buyers, and for 2018 there’s an all-new model in dealers. Overall it’s an evolution of the outgoing car, although that’s no bad thing, as the last Fiesta was still a class-leading supermini. The cabin gets a signifi cant upgrade, with a new dashboard layout that features a touchscreen infotainment system that gets rid of the mass of buttons found in the last car. Build quality has also improved, while passenger space

has been increased, too. Three- and fi ve-door models continue to be sold, but the latter is the more sensible purchase thanks to its added practicality. There are a wide range of petrol engines on off er and a diesel, while the range has expanded to now include sporty-looking ST-Line and posh Vignale (shown right) versions. A crossover-styled model will arrive later in 2018, when the Fiesta ST hot hatch will also hit dealers with a new three-cylinder turbocharged engine.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Focus ST-Line 1.5 TDCi

Ford Ka+

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Ka+ Zetec

The Ka+ is the smallest model in the Ford range, but, as the name suggests, it has a lot more to off er than the last Ka. It comes with fi ve doors for better cabin access for starters, it’s based on the platform of the last Ford Fiesta, so there’s more room inside, and it’s far better to drive than the previous Ka, too. It’s priced at a point where it replaces the entry-level versions of the Fiesta, so if you’re looking to get a small car that is good value for money and drives well compared to others in the segment, then it’s well worth a look.

Ford Focus

The Ford Focus has consistently been one of the best-selling cars in Ireland, although it’s showing its age now in the face of some very talented compact family car opposition. With fi ve-door hatchback, four-door saloon and estate body styles to choose from, along with a strong engine line-up ranging from a turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol option to a number of fuel-sipping diesel engines and on to the incredibly fast 2.3-litre all-wheel- drive Focus RS (right), there is a model to suit nearly every buyer. Inside, the cabin looks and feels robust, although the hard plastics reveal the car’s age. Nonetheless, the Focus still drives and handles well, so it won’t disappoint, especially on Irish roads. Due to be replaced late in 2018 by an all-new car.
