Kia Carens Kia Niro


The Niro is Kia’s fi rst dedicated hybrid model and combines its small on-board battery with a 1.6-litre petrol engine. Unlike the Toyota Prius, the Niro adopts more of a crossover style, making it ideal for family life, although its 427-litre boot isn’t as large as those in some similarly sized SUVs. It can travel short distances at slow speed using only battery power and regenerates while braking. Exciting isn’t a word we would use to describe how it drives, but every aspect of the car is geared towards minimising fuel consumption, which Kia states is 3.8 litres per 100 kilometres on the offi cial test procedure. If you don’t want or need a diesel crossover, this is one to consider.

If you need a car that’s versatile, spacious and capable of carrying seven, the Kia Carens could be the answer. As MPVs go, the Kia is one of the more stylish, and it hides its functionality well. Three individual middle row seats can fold and tumble to suit and when the two third row chairs aren’t required they fold fl at to provide a 492-litre boot. Even the front passenger seat folds down, making this one very versatile car. Based on the cee’d, it drives well, feeling safe and solid on the road. Add in an economical diesel engine, seven-year warranty and a modest starting price and it makes plenty of sense with the household budget.
