MINI Countryman
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Countryman Cooper SD ALL4
The Countryman brings SUV qualities to the MINI brand without losing too much of its charm. The chunky image remains recognisably MINI, and the option of all-wheel drive enables it to tackle light off -roading. On tarmac, it can be fun to hustle along, with the all-wheel drive transmission helping in the bends. Despite its overall size, it doesn’t feel all that big inside, although passenger space is adequate for the target audience. A 450-litre boot eclipses those of similarly styled rivals like the Audi Q2, in fairness. In addition to the diesel and petrol Cooper, Cooper S and John Cooper Works versions, the Countryman is also available as MINI’s fi rst plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.

MINI Hatch
Hugely successful and unquestionably a modern icon, the MINI Hatch has grown over the years not only in size, but also shape. The addition of a fi ve-door version is welcome, catering for the needs of existing MINI owners that now have small families, for example. One thing that hasn’t changed is the MINI’s fun-to-drive character. Whether choosing the regular diesel or petrol engines or opting for the faster Cooper or Cooper S versions, one thing is guaranteed – fun. If you want to take your driving to the max, look up the John Cooper Works model, which has 231hp and goes like stink!
72 Auto Ireland Guide to New Cars 2018 MINI Convertible
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Convertible Cooper S
Few cars can deliver as much fun and kerbside appeal as a MINI Convertible. Four generations in, it’s safe to say that MINI has ‘cool’ down to a fi ne art. The fabric roof fully retracts in 18 seconds, but sits on top of the boot rather than stowing out of the way, which hinders rearward visibility. Thankfully this time around MINI has fi tted a reversing camera. Roof foibles aside, the Convertible is an agile, fun car to drive. To get the most enjoyment, steer towards the Cooper S version, as its exhaust sounds sporty, especially on the overrun. The two rear seats aren’t entirely useless and also fold in a 50/50 split to help accommodate larger items in the boot.
