OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Megane dCi 130 GT Line Nav

Renault Clio

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Clio Dynamique Nav 1.2 TCe 90

The Clio has evolved over the years, growing in size and improving in looks. Newer engines include a 120hp 1.2-litre petrol and 110hp 1.5-litre diesel. While these engines do work well on paper, with respectable offi cial fuel economy and emissions levels, you do still need to work them to extract the best performance. Better are the improvements to the cabin, which remains quiet even at motorway speeds, but the overall ride quality lags behind that of many other superminis. More appealing to petrolheads is the Renaultsport Clio, which certainly looks the part of the hot hatch. Its turbocharged 1.6-litre engine won’t sit well with purists, however, nor will the six-speed automatic, which just isn’t as engaging as previous manual gearboxes.

Renault Megane

Looks-wise, the current Renault Megane is an attractive car. Its bold grille and C-shaped daytime running light design now features on most of the French brand’s cars, and it helps the Megane stand out in the street. Design options see the Megane off ered as a fi ve-door hatchback, a saloon called the Grand Coupe and an estate version referred to as the Sport Tourer. Two petrol and three diesel engines complete the range and, whichever one you choose, the Megane is a pleasantly refi ned car to drive. We’re willing to forgive it for not being the most exciting car to drive in its standard form, but the GT model is more engaging, thanks to the addition of rear-wheel steering. New for 2018 is the latest Renaultsport Megane, which promises to be one of the best-handling hot hatches.

Renault Captur

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Captur Signature X Nav

Among the multitude of compact crossovers, the Renault Captur still stands out as one of the better all-round packages. An update in mid-2017 brought minor cosmetic tweaks to the exterior while improvements to the cabin materials were made inside. One of the Captur’s charms is how car-like it is to drive, with just the slightly raised seating position giving away its crossover aspirations. A decent boot and roomy cabin add to the pluses. The engines available aren’t the most powerful, but the smallest 0.9-litre petrol is the best choice, especially for urban dwellers. Image-conscious buyers can also choose from a wide selection of exterior colour combinations, including contrasting roof colours.

Renault Kadjar

Few segments of the market are as competitive as the mid-size SUV class, but one of the most successful models since its debut is the Renault Kadjar. Borrowing quite a lot from the evergreen Nissan Qashqai, the Kadjar has the looks and interior space to set it apart from many others. The quality of the materials inside is better than what was typical of Renault, and the digital instrument display on higher-grade models is a nice feature. It isn’t the most exciting drive, but you can push on without it feeling stretched. While most buyers will happily settle for the front-wheel-drive versions, you can also choose a transmission that powers all four wheels, too.
