OUR PICK OF THE RANGE i40 Tourer Executive 1.7 diesel
Hyundai i30
The Hyundai i30 line-up is set to blossom this coming year with the addition of the company’s fi rst-ever hot hatch, (right), the 275hp i30 N, plus a stylish yet practical i30 Tourer estate and, fi nally, the i30 Fastback with its swoopy rear bodywork. They’ll join the existing i30 hatchback, a fi ve-door model that competes with the Volkswagen Golf, etc. While the i30’s styling is restrained, it’s a high-quality product with a decent level of standard specifi cation and a comfortable chassis. There’s good room inside (if not quite class-leading) and a wide range of petrol and diesel options in the line-up. The 1.6 diesel is economical and great for those that spend a lot of time on the motorway, but our favourite is the willing new turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol engine.
Hyundai i40
Did you ever think you’d see the day that Hyundai would be producing a high-quality saloon alternative to such established nameplates as the Toyota Avensis and Ford Mondeo? That’s precisely what the Hyundai i40 is and we reckon it’s one of the best options in the D-segment now if comfort, economy and value for money are top of your list of priorities. A mid-life facelift kept it looking fresh and the comfortable interior remains one of the biggest around, too. The saloon might have a lower starting price, but we much rather the i40 Tourer estate, which costs a modest €1,000 more for the same specifi cation.

Hyundai Kona
This is one of Hyundai’s newest models, and certainly its edgiest in terms of style. The Kona sits in the B-SUV class, a segment of compact crossovers that has dramatically grown in the past year. To help it stand out, the Kona has incredibly distinctive styling and a range of vivid paint colours and personalisation options. Don’t worry; it can look a little more normal when painted a subtle colour. And actually, the interior of the Kona is quite conventional, if noticeably well-made and, of course, well-equipped. It’s not the most spacious cabin in the class, however. Petrol options only for now and the 1.0-litre engine is a gem.
