OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Compass 1.6 MultiJet II Limited
Jeep Compass
The Jeep Compass name returns to the Irish market for 2018, and this all-new model is likely to fast become the company’s top seller. It has all the trademark Jeep styling cues, like the seven-slot grille and chunky proportions. The Compass caters more to European tastes than most of the line-up, and it serves as a genuine alternative to ubiquitous SUVs like the Hyundai Tucson and

Nissan Qashqai. A 438-litre boot is adequate, and the interior passenger space is generous enough. Satisfying segment demands, the 1.6-litre front-wheel-drive version will be the favourite. However, Jeep has a long history of producing cars with genuine off -road ability, and these features will be available alongside a 2.0-litre engine and nine-speed automatic transmission.
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Cherokee Longitude Plus 2.0 MultiJet II FWD
Jeep Cherokee Jeep Renegade
If you fancy a compact SUV with some decent off -road heritage and lots of personality, you could do a lot worse than that Jeep Renegade. In spite of its compact size, the tall, boxy design gives the Renegade good interior space, even if it’s never likely to be classed as a family car. In the lower models, the interior looks and feels hard wearing, but the Limited and Trailhawk cars are more luxurious, if expensive. Jeep has a solid range of petrol and diesel engines in the Renegade range, with power outputs from 110- to 170hp and front- or all-wheel-drive. It’s a little ‘bouncy’ on the road, but still a highly likeable car.

The Cherokee is Jeep’s attempt to take on the established premium players in the SUV segment. It can match them on size and space, but up against the likes of the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and even the Jaguar F-Pace, the Cherokee lags some way behind. Its interior quality isn’t fi nished to the same high standards as its rivals’ for starters. The 2.0-litre diesel engine has plenty of power for its size and features a manual gearbox that is pleasant to use. Long distance cruising suits the Jeep well, and it’s capable of decent fuel economy. It can be costly to upgrade to the all-wheel-drive model, but this is only necessary if you plan on doing regular towing or going off -road.
