OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Outlander PHEV

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Just one model off ered

Mitsubishi Outlander Mitsubishi Lancer

Time hasn’t been kind to the Mitsubishi Lancer and now against newer rivals in a segment that’s decreasing, it looks old. The cabin plastics look and feel cheap and on the move the car has a stiff er ride than you’d expect, detracting from passenger comfort. When it comes to engine choice there’s just one - a 1.6-litre petrol unit with emissions that see it taxed in the same band as most larger SUVs. Combine this with pricing that is just not bargain basement enough and it’s easy to see why we no longer see many newly registered Lancers on the road.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Pajero Executive

Much of Mitsubishi’s recent success can be put down squarely to the Outlander. The last round of updates saw it gain a more contemporary look, with further improvements to the interior. Its line-up starts with a front- wheel-drive fi ve-seat version, with power from a 2.2-litre diesel engine. That same engine is used for the seven-seat Outlander, which features all-wheel drive as standard with the choice of manual or automatic gearboxes. Of more interest to those based in town is the plug-in hybrid version, which combines its battery tech with a 2.0-litre petrol engine and automatic transmission. Although this is only available as a fi ve-seater due to the space needed for the battery, it falls into the lowest tax band and, provided you keep it charged up, should be cheap to run over shorter journeys.

Mitsubishi Pajero

Mitsubishi’s tough Pajero SUV may be getting quite long in the tooth now, but if you’re in the market for a truly capable 4x4, then it should make your shortlist. It is sold in both two-door and four-door body styles in two-seat commercial confi guration, but also as a fi ve-seat commercial vehicle called the Pajero Executive under the N1 regulations. With a braked towing capacity of 3,500kg and a selectable all-wheel-drive system, the Pajero is capable of tackling more than the average SUV could hope to and it’s undoubtedly at its best off -road or towing. If you drive mainly on the road, this is not the SUV for you, though, as it’s not very civilised.

Mitsubishi L200

There are lots of pickups on the market, but the Mitsubishi L200 remains one of the more established names. In its current guise, it has lots of practical features including the capability to carry a 1,045kg payload. Adding to this is the ability to tow a braked load of up to 3,100kg and standard fi tment of Hill Start Assist. Drivers can switch between two- and four-wheel drive on the move at speeds of up to 100km/h and for more rugged terrain there’s a low range setting with a central locking diff erential for an even torque split between front and rear when needed. The cabin is robust and yet not overly utilitarian in its fi nish.
