OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Range Rover Vogue 3.0 diesel

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Discovery Sport 2.0 TD4 SE

Land Rover Discovery Sport

Although the Discovery Sport shares its name and seven-seat layout with the regular Land Rover Discovery, it’s not closely related to the larger car in terms of platform. In fact, the Discovery Sport is a good deal smaller in size and the optional extra row of seats is cramped for anyone larger than early teens. Nonetheless, the rest of the car is spacious and it’s a classy SUV that can also deliver when the terrain gets rough. There’s a wide range of trim levels, all based around a 2.0-litre diesel engine, which is fi ne, though could be quieter, and the option of a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Range Rover

The Range Rover line-up came in for a nip and tuck toward the end of 2017 to keep it fresh and in line with the rest of the Land Rover range in terms of technology. That didn’t change its core values and it remains a grandiose and almost regal car that is far more about being a luxury model than it is an SUV. Saying that, the Range Rover is ridiculously capable off -road and an excellent tow car. The fi ve-seat cabin is cavernous, as is the boot, and it’s all gorgeously trimmed, too. There are turbodiesel, supercharged petrol and even a plug-in hybrid options, along with standard and long wheelbase body styles to choose from.

Editor’s Choice

Range Rover Sport

While the Range Rover Sport lives in the shadow of its bigger sibling on the price list, we’ve always felt that it was the star of the line-up, as it maintains that imperious presence of the Range Rover proper, but in a more enjoyable to drive set-up, with the option of an extra pair of seats in the back. Since it was updated in 2017, there’s been the option of a 2.0-litre diesel engine for the fi rst time, though we don’t think it suits the car. The new plug-in hybrid powertrain, however, does, giving the big SUV loads of performance, yet theoretically low running costs. It’s a bit of an occasion of a car, this one.
