2018 as newer alternatives arrive on the scene, but it still makes a compelling case for itself with attractive looks, a spacious and well-made interior and a high level of standard equipment. It’s mid-class for its on-road dynamics, but running costs are low and there’s loads of choice in the range.

The Hyundai i10 is a modest enough fi ve-door hatchback that competes in the so-called city car class. It’s pleasant enough looking and comes with acceptably low running costs, but it doesn’t stand out in the sector at fi rst glance. However, drive it back-to-back with its main rivals, including the trio of cars from the Volkswagen Group, and it really impresses. On the road, the i10 feels as stable and refi ned as a much bigger car, even if the 1.0-litre petrol engine (the only one off ered) is a little weedy. What’s more, the rear seats are the most spacious in the class – and the easiest to get into.

Only on sale since 2015, the Hyundai i20 has its work cut out to grab a slice of the incredibly competitive supermini B-segment. Newer alternatives, such as the SEAT Ibiza and Ford Fiesta, have it licked for driver appeal and engines, though the i20 still looks sharp and has a generously proportioned cabin and boot. That interior isn’t the most innovative looking, but it has plenty of equipment in it and it does feel very well put together. Hyundai’s unlimited mileage fi ve-year warranty package gives it more appeal of course. The so-so 1.2-litre petrol engine is the only sensible option as the 1.1 diesel (though very economical) is expensive to buy and most supermini drivers don’t cover enough mileage to make diesel worthwhile. If you do, and don’t carry people in the back often, perhaps consider the diesel-only i20 Coupe (above, as it looks even more stylish.
