Mazda6
The Mazda6 has had continual updates over its life cycle and another will arrive in 2018. A spacious cabin features a clean design layout and if you need more luggage room there’s an estate version. Appealing looks are matched by solid build quality and behaviour on the road that sees it classed among more premium saloons in terms of the driving experience. The 2.0-litre petrol engine is smooth, but it’s unlikely to interest most buyers as much as the 2.2-litre diesel, which comes in 150hp and 175hp states of tune. Although the suspension is fi rm, long journeys seem eff ortless in this car.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE CX-3 SKYACTIV-G 120 GT
Nowhere is the swing back to petrol from diesel more noticeable than in the compact SUV segment, and the Mazda CX-3 has marked its territory with a 120hp 2.0-litre petrol option. You can still choose a 1.5-litre diesel, but the petrol engine is that bit sweeter, if a little thirsty. With a 350-litre boot, the CX-3 doesn’t top the practicality tables, and rear passenger room isn’t overly generous, but it makes up for it on the road and in terms of how it looks. Sharp steering and a slightly fi rm suspension set-up mean it’s one of the more fun SUVs to drive.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE MX-5 1.5 SKYACTIV-G Roadster
The Mazda MX-5 remains the benchmark for aff ordable two-seat sports cars. This fourth generation has gone back to the philosophy of the original ‘NA’ model, with weight brought right down to boost the handling. Everything from the driving position to the slick, mechanical feeling manual gear change feels absolutely right. The fabric roof can still be dropped or raised single-handedly in seconds, and the petrol engine loves to rev. If you can live with the minimal boot space and small cabin, then the MX-5 makes for a perfectly acceptable daily driver, although some may prefer to keep it as a weekend stress relief tool. There’s also the MX-5 RF variant, with a folding hardtop roof. This adds greater security and unique looks, but it’s every bit as appealing as the regular Roadster.
