Skoda Karoq


OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Karoq Style 1.6 TDI DSG


Slotting into the Skoda SUV range beneath the seven-seat Kodiaq is the new Karoq. It’s the replacement for the Yeti, but it gets a more conventional SUV look. Well-rounded styling and an interior that provides decent space for passengers are just two of the positive attributes of the Karoq. The 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine is the star of the show, delivering punchy power without adversely aff ecting fuel consumption. The manual transmission is pleasant to use, but the seven-speed DSG automatic is well worth the additional cost. Class-leading boot space is a plus, as are the many clever touches throughout, making this one of the best mid-sized crossover packages on off er in 2018.

Skoda Citigo


OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Citigo Ambition 5-door 75hp


There’s not much to separate the competition in the city car segment. All the cars in this class must extract the most amount of the space from a compact shape, and one car that does this well is the Skoda Citigo. To be fair, it is virtually identical to its SEAT and Volkswagen relations, but the pricing and specifi cation of the Citigo put it slightly ahead. Buyers can choose a three-door version, but the fi ve-door model is more practical and will be easier to sell on. The entry-grade Active variant comes solely with a 60hp 1.0-litre petrol engine, while the option of a 75hp version features in all other cars. Meanwhile, the range-topping Monte Carlo model adds more spec and a unique colour scheme. On the whole, the Citigo delivers a fun drive and enough quality to make it feel like decent value for a new, small car.

Skoda Rapid


The Rapid is the car in the Skoda range that gets the least amount of attention. The standard hatchback and sharper looking Spaceback version fi ll a gap between the smaller Fabia and larger Octavia, although the Rapid doesn’t provide the same level of driving quality as these two models. The Spaceback isn’t very roomy inside - something that’s never usually a problem with Skodas - and buyers considering a saloon are likely to skip the Rapid and go straight for an Octavia instead. It’s a shame, because the Rapid isn’t a bad car, and the Spaceback looks good. Improvements have been made to both models recently and a sensible choice of engines ranging from a 1.0-litre petrol up to a 1.6-litre diesel should provide enough options for interested buyers.
