OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Forester 2.0i XE CVT ES

Subaru Forester

These days, the Forester is a bona fi de SUV with the looks and ground clearance to match. Though it’s only available as a fi ve-seat car, the interior is distinctly spacious, front and rear, plus there’s a massive boot out back. The cabin is less ‘rugged’ than Subarus of old as well, especially as you move up the range, yet it still feels unbreakable and of very high quality. Buyers have a choice of petrol or diesel 2.0-litre engines and all Foresters have four-wheel drive. The CVT automatic is a good option (standard with the petrol engine) and petrol power turns the Forester into a great urban SUV.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Impreza 1.6i S CVT

Subaru XV

Although the styling and concept of the XV crossover has seemingly not changed, the 2018 model is actually a brand new car built on Subaru’s new vehicle platform. The XV is often overlooked by SUV buyers as it appears to be just a jacked-up hatchback, yet it comes with all-wheel drive as standard and is one of Subaru’s most accomplished cars in terms of dynamics. Subaru off ers the new model with petrol power only, however, which may limit its appeal to rural buyers. Nonetheless, it makes for a useful low-mileage runabout that should never give any trouble.

Subaru Impreza

The Impreza is probably Subaru’s best-known nameplate thanks mostly to its rallying exploits and one Colin McRae. Sadly, those halcyon days are long gone for the Impreza and though a brand new model has just arrived in Ireland, it’s now a very sensible fi ve-door hatchback with no high-performance aspirations. Its layout is a little quirky, though, with a sole 1.6-litre petrol engine off ered, mated to a CVT automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive. It’s slow to say the least, though the chassis feels good and Subaru does have an enviable reputation for reliability.
