OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Crossland X 1.2 Turbo
Opel Corsa
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Corsa SC 1.0 Turbo
It’s a model name that has a good reputation among motorists in Ireland, yet the Opel Corsa has faded from the limelight in recent years. The current model arrived at the end of 2014 after an extensive overhaul and continues to be off ered in three- and fi ve-door variants. For its size, it drives well, helped in part by its long wheelbase. The 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine is great for whizzing around town and there’s a faster 115-hp SRi model, too. But its 1.3-litre diesel engine is equally deserving of a mention. If you fi nd yourself doing more motorway driving, this could fi t in with your needs, and it is one of the more refi ned engines of its type. For hot hatch lovers there’s the Corsa OPC, and with 205hp it’s pretty quick. However, with high emissions placing it in tax Band E (€750 per annum), you’d have to really want one to justify buying it.
Opel Crossland X
Opel has caught on to the crossover boom, and the Crossland X is one of its latest additions. It sits on almost the same price point as the Mokka X, though the latter is slightly more SUV-like. The Crossland X also serves as a replacement of sorts for the Meriva compact MPV, and indeed it does serve up generous amounts of cabin space. In comparison to other cars in the segment, the interior quality leaves a little to be desired, especially considering the price. Mechanically it shares much with the Peugeot 2008, which means it only comes with front-wheel drive with either a fi ve- or six-speed manual or six- speed automatic gearbox. Class it more as a compact MPV and the driving experience and ride quality are reasonably good, but other than the taller seating position this feels little like a crossover.
Opel Mokka X
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Mokka X 1.6 CDTi SC
The Mokka X off ers both front- and all-wheel-drive transmissions in a compact SUV package. Chunky looks and raised driving position add to that, but inside, the cabin isn’t as spacious as you might expect. While it lacks space, the cabin is well-fi nished, with a centre console that features a seven- or eight-inch touchscreen, depending on specifi cation. In most situations the all-wheel- drive models send power to the front wheels to reduce fuel consumption, and only send power to the rear wheels when traction levels are reduced. The result is a surefooted feel when driving in poorer conditions. Meanwhile, the Mokka X’s ‘Whisper Diesel’ engine mostly lives up to its name, seeming more refi ned than others on the market.

Opel Grandland X
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Grandland X SRi 1.6 Turbo D
With Opel’s fresh emphasis on SUVs, the Grandland X comes in to cap off the range. This fi ve-seat SUV shares a lot with the Peugeot 3008, but it lacks the design fl air of its French relation. Nonetheless, the Grandland X’s styling has better proportions than the other Opel crossovers, and it features a roomy cabin, though it isn’t class leading regarding boot space. Opel off ers a 1.2-litre petrol engine, but many prospective buyers may be tempted by the 120hp 1.6-litre diesel for its low emissions and longer driving range. A more powerful diesel is also scheduled to arrive later in 2018. A choice of three equipment grades will suit a variety of budgets, and all models feature Opel’s OnStar connected services technology.
