Dacia Duster The Dacia Duster is a perfect car for the here and now, off ering genuine four- wheel-drive capability for an impressively low price. So long as you’re not worried about badge snobbery, refi nement or an ergonomic interior design, the Duster makes for a usefully sized alternative to the obvious choices - and it’s much cheaper


than anything else of the same size to buy. That’s not the only reason to go for it, either, as it’s particularly good over a rough road and has proven to be ruggedly reliable. It doesn’t have the best safety rating, though, and a far more sophisticated replacement arrives in the middle of 2018, so buy with your eyes open.

The Dacia Sandero is a supermini-sized fi ve-door hatchback for the price of a car in the class below. That’s it in a nutshell. A refresh in 2016 enhanced its appearance, but it’s still best described as ‘inoff ensive’ to look at and the interior, though well-equipped for the most part, isn’t as stylish or customisable as those in the trendiest small hatchbacks on the market. If you ‘get’ the Dacia way of doing things, then you’ll realise there’s precious little reason to go for anything other than the entry-level petrol version in Alternative specifi cation. This is a car as an appliance, nothing more.


Dacia Logan MCV/Logan Stepway


MCV stands for Maximum Capacity Vehicle and the Logan MCV is eff ectively a Sandero estate with a 573-litre boot out the back. It’s not pretty and the interior is from the distant past in comparison to most modern cars’, but it is highly practical and incredibly cheap to buy. That argument goes out the window a tad if you go for the diesel engine option or you upgrade to the newer Stepway body, but we think the latter transforms the Logan into a relatively appealing looking thing, giving it a bit of a USP in the marketplace. Saying that, the Stepway model overlaps with the Dacia Duster on pricing, and that’s probably a better option.

Dacia Sandero Stepway


From a Dacia point of view, Stepway means ‘ruggedised’, though not necessarily rugged, you understand. So, the Sandero Stepway is no more capable off the beaten track than the regular fi ve-door hatchback it’s based upon and it can’t be specifi ed with four-wheel drive. However, given the number of these you see on the road, it appears that people really like the looks and the concept - and don’t need extra capability. You do pay for it, but the line-up is wider so Stepway buyers get more choice. As with the regular Sandero, diesel power makes little sense for a car of this size unless you plan to use it on the motorway regularly.
