This generation of the Audi A6 is not much longer for this world, as we expect to see a brand-new car at some stage in 2018. That should mean some bargains on the outgoing model, and while it lags the 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class in terms of technology, it’s still an impressively refi ned, economical and comfortable executive car. The model range is huge, though it’s only the 2.0 TDI diesel engines that sell in Ireland in any great number. Along with the standard four-door saloon there’s the A6 Avant estate and the A6 allroad quattro, a more rugged estate. Audi A8
2018 sees the introduction of an all-new Audi A8 saloon, which brings many fi rsts for the German car maker. All A8 models will feature hybrid technology, either in the form of mild or plug-in hybrid specifi cations. The former doesn’t require plugging in and works without any input from the driver. It can even coast with the combustion engine off for up to 40 seconds at a time to save fuel. The plug-in version will come later and will be capable of driving more than 50 kilometres using only battery power.

Unsurprisingly, the interior of the A8 is virtually peerless in its quality of fi nish. It does away with almost all physical buttons in favour of two large touchscreens. The adaptive air suspension adds to refi nement levels on the move, as well. The A8 isn’t the most involving drive, such is the insulation from the outside world, though that adds to its luxurious demeanour. When legislation permits the use of its Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities, driving an A8 should be even more relaxing.
