OUR PICK OF THE RANGE X1 xDrive20d xLine
BMW X1 While the original BMW X1 was little more than a small estate on small stilts, the current version takes on the appearance of a proper SUV, and it’s far more spacious than its predecessor, too. In fact, it has so much room inside that it may tempt some buyers out of the BMW X3. Saying that, the X1’s cabin is shared with the 2 Series Active/Gran Tourers so it’s practical and well-made, but not quite as luxurious as its bigger brother. The X1 drives well, however, and though fi rm on the road, it’s never uncomfortable. Other than the ‘20i’ petrol variant, it’s diesel all the way for the X1.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE X3 xDrive20d xLine
The X3 SUV is one of the newest cars in the BMW line-up, just launched in its third generation. It goes up against the Audi Q5 and Mercedes GLC amongst others and vies for class honours, too. While retaining its predecessor’s dynamic abilities, the new X3 is more refi ned and has a far more impressive interior – on a par with the BMW 5 Series, in fact. It can be had with the latest in driver assistance and infotainment technologies too, of course. For now, all models have xDrive four-wheel drive and the company’s excellent eight-speed automatic transmission. Diesel power will top the sales chart, but we have a soft spot for the high-performance M40i model, too.

BMW X4
The BMW X4 has been a bit of an acquired taste ever since it was launched in 2014 and it remains so, which explains the small line-up of diesel-only options for Irish buyers. BMW refers to it as an SAC – Sports Activity Coupe – but it’s an SUV with slightly compromised packaging by anyone else’s defi nition. In fairness, it’s not much smaller inside than the X3 it is based upon, but we reckon its opinion-dividing appearance limits its success. Now, as there’s a new X3, it also looks out of date. There will be a brand- new version within the year.
