Range Rover Velar
Slotting in between the Evoque and larger Range Rover Sport, the Velar is one of the most stylish SUVs around. It takes Range Rover design to the next level with lovely touches like fl ush door handles and copper inserts. Inside, it is no less impressive, with large touchscreens handling a lot of functions. For most buyers, the 2.0-litre diesel engine will suffi ce, although it isn’t

quite as powerful or refi ned as the 3.0-litre V6 diesel. Every model features all-wheel drive and an automatic transmission, and while many drivers won’t take advantage of it, the Velar has plenty of off -road capability. There are numerous specifi cations to choose from depending on your taste and budget, as, unsurprisingly, some of these can get expensive.

Range Rover Evoque
Since its launch, the Evoque has proven to be a huge success and remains a popular choice today. The three-door ‘coupe’ isn’t that practical, but the fi ve-door makes for an ideal small premium SUV. Adding to its broader appeal is the availability of front-wheel-drive versions that are more aff ordable and cheaper to run. Regardless of transmission, the Evoque feels sure-footed on the move and the nine-speed automatic transmission works well. A stiff chassis means you can have some fun on windy roads too, with little in the way of body roll. For the more image-conscious there’s also an Evoque Convertible model that brings open-air driving to a two-door body.

Land Rover Discovery
In 2017, Land Rover launched the fi fth generation of its Discovery, a vehicle that started life as a three-door car built on the platform of the Range Rover, designed to compete with the onslaught of cheaper Japanese SUVs. It has come full circle, in a way, as the Discovery is now a vehicle that could comfortably get away with wearing a Range Rover badge - and its price tag refl ects that. Basically, the Discovery is a luxury family car that just so happens to be astoundingly good at going off the beaten track when needed. It’s massive inside (and out) and very comfortable. Running costs remain high though, despite a reduction in mass over its predecessor.
