Volvo XC40 The Volvo XC40 is a compact SUV built on the Swedish company’s new compact vehicle platform. Aimed at a younger buying demographic, the XC40 is perhaps more wilfully stylish than its bigger siblings, with a variety of personalisation options available. Available from launch with a 190hp D4 turbodiesel, all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic, a 1.5-litre turbo petrol option arrives early in 2018. Like all Volvos, the XC40 handles reasonably sharply, yet it is at its best when being driven more sedately, where its refi nement and smooth ride come into play. It’s a fi ne small crossover with an exceptional interior, too.

Volvo’s mid-sized premium SUV off ering is the XC60, essentially a scaled-down version of the magnifi cent XC90. It only has fi ve seats, but manages to preserve all of the desirable interior characteristics of the largest Swedish SUV, such as an exquisite dashboard design incorporating a large portrait touchscreen, wonderfully minimalistic fi xtures and fi ttings and a general feeling of incredible quality wherever you can prod or poke. The XC60 also looks good on the outside and drives in an assured, competent fashion. A wide array of engines is available, including a 400hp+ petrol-electric hybrid called the T8, but the best all-rounder is the 190hp/400Nm D4, coupled to an automatic gearbox and fi nished with Inscription trim.

Volvo S60/V60
The S60 and V60 are Volvo’s mid-sized saloon and estate respectively. Their evergreen styling has aged well and, despite now getting on in years, both models still deliver a comfortable ride with decent amounts of passenger and luggage space inside. Even though these cars aren’t that new, Volvo has continued to keep the engine line-up on par with the best in the segment. Buyers can also choose from a plug-in hybrid model in the V60, that lets you drive for short distances using only battery power. A more off -road friendly V60 Cross Country version is available, with additional protection on the bodywork and raised ground clearance.
