DS 3

Think of the DS 3 as the chic and oh-so-French alternative to the MINI and Audi’s A1 and you get the picture. At the time of writing, it’s the most impressive and successful of all the DS models and that’s despite the limitation of coming in a single, three-door hatchback body style. Though DS markets its cars for their design and exclusivity, the DS 3 is also really good to drive, which is why we think the 130hp petrol engine option is a good match, though the lesser petrol and diesel engines are more economical to buy and run, of course.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE DS 4 Prestige 1.6 BlueHDi 120

We’re all for oddball French cars, but sometimes things are taken too far. The DS 4, unfortunately, falls into the latter category. It looks a bit like a coupe, with its ‘hidden’ rear doors, and its dynamics seem to be tuned towards sporting prowess, yet DS refers to it as a prestige rival to the likes of the Mercedes A-Class and Audi A3. It can’t touch those cars for interior quality or long-term residual values, never mind practicality and image. The Crossback variant is a slightly higher-up version with some styling tweaks, which seems even more pointless. We’re not fans, in case you can’t tell.

DS 5

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE DS 5 Prestige 2.0 BlueHDi 180 EAT6

This should be the perfect DS. It’s quirky looking, but in an attractive way that keeps you interested, while the interior is wonderfully unique with (depending on specifi cation) its split roof design and extravagant ‘watchstrap’ leather upholstery. However, that cabin is cramped. And though a mid-life update improved refi nement and comfort, it still isn’t anywhere near as good on both counts as it should be, especially as it’s priced to compete with established heavyweights in the premium compact saloon class. In summary: we like it lots though it’s fl awed and it’s not a car you buy with your sensible hat on.
