At the time of writing, the third generation of the Porsche Cayenne SUV has been launched and we’ve driven three diff erent petrol-fuelled versions. The company hasn’t yet confi rmed that a new diesel model will be made, but it is expected, as is a plugin hybrid. The latter will probably be the most popular. Until then, while the Cayenne Turbo does a good job of impersonating a sports car on stilts, we’d recommend sticking with the entry-level version, as its turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine is fast enough for anyone and the rest of the car is of exceedingly high quality anyway. A sporty alternative to the default large family SUVs.

Porsche Panamera
The Panamera sports ‘saloon’ has evolved into a much more attractive prospect in its second generation. It’s still a fi ve-door hatchback body, though there’s also now an estate… Not that Porsche calls it that – it’s marketed as the Panamera Sport Turismo (below) and there’s something curiously more attractive about its extra practicality. Its boot isn’t massive, but there is more rear passenger space. Up front, the Panamera drives in a sportier manner than most executive cars of this size and there’s a wide range of powertrain options, including a few very fast hybrids. The range-topping Panamera Turbo, meanwhile, takes on genuine supercars with its performance.

The Porsche Macan is a compact SUV that shares some of its underpinnings with the latest Audi Q5 and it can be the subtlest car in the whole line-up if its specifi ed modestly. There’s a diesel version that ticks all the boxes in terms of performance and acceptable running costs, though of course, if you have deep pockets, there are loads of petrol-powered Macans to drool over, too. What’s more, Porsche has done an amazing job with the Macan’s chassis, making it as good to drive as some of its sports cars. It also looks attractive in a way the Cayenne can’t quite manage.
