Lexus IS
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE IS 300h Luxury
For many, the Lexus IS is a left-fi eld choice in a saloon market that’s dominated by the more popular BMW 3 Series and Audi A4. The IS is undoubtedly eye-catching, especially in F Sport trim, although the aggressively designed front-end may not appeal to everyone. Dynamically, the Lexus isn’t as crisp to drive as some of its rivals, with the focus more on its hybrid powertrain’s economy than outright performance. Commuting in traffi c is more relaxing in the Lexus, however, and its fuel consumption fi gures closely match that of diesel alternatives. Those who prioritise their connectivity won’t like the old-style infotainment system, but the specifi cation from mid-level ‘Luxury’ upwards is good.
Lexus GS
The Lexus GS is one of those lovely under-the- radar premium saloons. It matches established rivals like the Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5 Series for size and comfort and it edges past others when it comes to refi nement and quality. Two versions are available, both equipped with a hybrid system that enables silent battery-only driving for short periods in traffi c. The rear-wheel-drive layout boosts the car’s handling and in the case of the more powerful GS 450h, it’s reasonably quick, too. The cabin is fi nished to a very high standard and good enough to last for years.

Editor’s Choice
Lexus RX
The RX is one of our favourite Lexus models of the moment. It’s a large luxury SUV with fi ve seats and a hybrid powertrain that uses a smooth 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine and an electric motor to good eff ect. While it can’t hold a dynamic candle to the best of the German SUVs on the road, it is exceptionally quiet and comfortable. That suits its natural habitat, the city centre, where the hybrid system is at its best, allowing the RX to run silently for a surprising amount of the time. Buyers can choose from several generously equipped versions for now and there will be a new seven-seat variant launched later in 2018.
