OUR PICK OF THE RANGE 308 1.5 BlueHDi 130 Allure
Peugeot 508 Peugeot 308
A lightly refreshed Peugeot 308 lands in Ireland in 2018 to compete with the best-sellers in the C-segment hatchback class, namely the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. The 308 is a stylish car, off ered in fi ve-door hatch and SW estate body styles, majoring on high quality, great economy and lots of safety equipment. A new 1.5-litre diesel engine aims to give Peugeot the edge in terms of emissions and fuel consumption, and the 308 is middle-of- the pack when it comes to its ride comfort and handling balance. There are good petrol options in the line-up and even an engaging GTi model at the top of the range.
OUR PICK OF THE RANGE 508 Active 1.6 BlueHDi 120hp manual
Within the saloon market the Peugeot 508 can often get overlooked, but it is a comfortable and spacious car that features lots of equipment. The all-diesel engine range is target at business and fl eet buyers, as well as those living in rural areas, and to Peugeot’s credit, it does know how to do diesel engines well. All models are either in tax Band A2 or A3 and the offi cial fuel consumption fi gures are repeatable in everyday driving. Even on larger wheels, the 508 doesn’t sacrifi ce ride comfort, while a practical cabin design puts everything close to hand. Estate models add generous levels of luggage space or, for a more rugged look, there’s the 508 RXH, although it is only available with the more powerful 180hp 2.0-litre BlueHDi diesel engine and automatic transmission.

Peugeot 2008
There’s an air of simplicity about the Peugeot 2008. It doesn’t seem to try as hard as some rivals to shout about being a crossover. Regardless of petrol or diesel power, no model costs more than €200 per annum to tax and, against its main rivals, the Peugeot edges a nose in front when it comes to equipment levels. Adding to this is a range-topping GT Line version that includes a lot of standard kit. Passenger space throughout is good and the boot, at 410 litres, should be plenty for most buyers. While it sticks to front-wheel drive only, Peugeot does off er its Grip Control system that accommodates fi ve drive modes for more challenging conditions. On the road, it feels composed if a touch fi rm at times, but we rate the 2008’s handling overall as one of the best in the segment.

Peugeot 5008
Arriving into Peugeot’s now-full SUV range is the 5008. This seven-seat SUV is very much the big brother of the 3008, and there’s more than a passing family resemblance between the two. It’s the same story inside the cabin, where models get a sharp digital instrument display and eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The cabin is roomy, while the rear seats slide, recline and fold in numerous combinations to best suit your requirements. Like the 3008 it is based on, the 5008 drives well and doesn’t feel overly soft in the corners. It soaks up bumps well and, even though diesel engines remain a substantial part of the product off ering, these aren’t lacking in refi nement. However, if you make shorter journeys more frequently the 1.2-litre petrol unit provides plenty of power.
