To understand how astounding the Lexus LC coupe is, you fi rst need to realise that most of the rest of the line-up struggles to compete with the default choices in the market from other car makers. The LC, however, is a truly exciting sports coupe with bags of personality, spectacular design


inside and out and a geek-tastic level of engineering and technology under the skin. If this is how Lexus sees its models going, then we need to buy shares in the Japanese luxury car maker. Shockingly, even the hybrid version (there’s a purely petrol model, too) is really brilliant to drive.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE CT 200h Executive


A mildly revamped version of the Lexus CT 200h hatchback arrives in Ireland for 2018, but the update hasn’t gone far enough in our opinions. It looks ok, and is undoubtedly well made, but the powertrain is deeply unsatisfying, being neither fast nor quiet enough to justify the purchase price. Most buyers will be happier in a diesel rival or, something Lexus won’t like to hear, a new Toyota Prius instead, as it’s far more effi cient. This car’s days are numbered unless future taxation changes favour hybrid power. Lexus needs to replace it with something more interesting and more capable.


Lexus NX


Like the Lexus CT, the NX came in for a modest update ahead of 2018 sales. Most of the changes are cosmetic and they aren’t drastic, so if you liked it before, you’ll still appreciate the sharp appearance, while others might fi nd it a little OTT. The cabin is beautifully made as ever, though the infotainment remains frustrating to use. The NX is simply brilliant in an urban situation, where its hybrid powertrain pushes it along eff ortlessly, regularly slipping into the silent EV mode of operation. Out on the open road, though, it’s not very impressive, and still won’t drag diesel SUV buyers away from their steeds.
