OUR PICK OF THE RANGE E 220 d AMG Line A/T

Mercedes-Benz E-Class When it comes to German saloons, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has long been a highly regarded car. In its latest guise, Mercedes has crammed it full of technology without skimping on the fi ner things. A clever dashboard design maximises cabin space, while every surface, right down to the air vents, is fi nished to an impressively high standard. The diesel engine range is mostly

all classed in the A tax bands, while petrol versions feature hybrid technology. Estate models boost cargo volume and a new All- Terrain version brings a crossover vibe along with all-wheel drive. For the keener driving enthusiast, there’s a powerful Mercedes- AMG E 43 4Matic model with 401hp, but even that is overshadowed by the ballistic E 63 S 4Matic

Mercedes-Benz A-Class

The smallest car in the Mercedes portfolio is the A-Class, a premium fi ve-door hatchback that counts the BMW 1 Series, Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf among its key rivals. It compares favourably with those in terms of image and style for sure, though buyers that need space for a growing family might be better served elsewhere. Nonetheless, the A-Class is engaging to drive and feels of high quality inside. It does, however, need to be further up the specifi cation ladder for it to feel worthy of the Mercedes badge, and that’s when things get a little expensive. The diesel engines are economical, if rowdy, so we reckon it’s best as a modestly powerful petrol car.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class

Is this the forgotten Mercedes-Benz? The B-Class is a fi ve-door, fi ve-seat compact people carrier that has a versatile and spacious cabin, designed to appeal to small families with an eye on the snob appeal of the three-pointed Mercedes badge on the bonnet. It’s well-made, very smooth and comfortable on the road and it should hold its value better than similar cars from ‘mainstream’ brands, but you pay for all of that with a high purchase price. There’s a wide range of petrol and diesel engines to choose from, but keep it simple and choose depending on your likely mileage.
