Audi TT The current generation of the sporty Audi TT hasn’t been quite as successful as the fi rst in terms of sales, but it’s a vastly superior car in every way. Both the Coupe and Roadster are genuinely brilliant to drive in all guises, though to extract the most from the capable chassis you really should go for one of the 2.0-litre TFSI petrol engines. There’s a 1.8 as well and even a 2.0 TDI diesel for those that want to commute longer distances in style. And stylish it is, especially inside with the very cool ‘Virtual Cockpit’ digital dashboard. For the ultimate TT, you’ll need the 400hp RS version, though it’s not the TT at its best.


Audi R8


Now into its second generation, the car dubbed the ‘everyday supercar’ remains every bit as usable while still delivering prodigious levels of performance. Its styling has just the right blend of conservatism and presence. The quality of fi nish both inside and out is second-to-none. The ‘standard’ R8 has a naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 petrol engine producing 540hp located midship in the chassis, with power sent to all four wheels via Audi’s quattro transmission. The seven-speed dual-clutch automatic can swop between ratios seamlessly, or you can control the shifts for yourself via the steering wheel-mounted paddles. For even more performance there’s the R8 V10 plus model that gets a power increase to 610hp and will see 100km/h appear on the digital dashboard display in just 3.2 seconds. Lashings of carbon fi bre and a fi xed rear wing denote that this isn’t your common or garden R8. If you’re going to buy an R8, you may as well go the whole hog and get the plus model. You won’t fi nd a more user-friendly supercar than this. Oh, and if you like to challenge your follicles, there’s also an open-topped Spyder model…
