Mazda CX-5

If we were rating cars on looks alone, the CX-5 would be a class winner. The latest model is well-proportioned and features reasonable levels of both cargo and passenger space, as well. Its raised driving position gives a commanding view of the road, while the all-wheel- drive transmission holds on when pushed. Up front, the infotainment

system is intuitive to use, if lacking certain connectivity features, and all the surfaces have a high-quality look and feel to them. Five trim levels provide a decent choice for equipment, but just two engines are on off er. The manual gearbox is worth choosing over the automatic, which is starting to feel dated compared to newer units.

Mazda3 Mazda2

If smart looks and a higher quality fi nish are important to you when it comes to a small car, the Mazda2 ought to be on your shopping list. It’s not the cheapest car in its class, but it’s one of the better-fi nished models out there, especially in its higher grades. Mazda hasn’t followed the trend of fi tting downsized turbocharged engines either, sticking with a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol with either 75hp or 90hp, depending on the model. The latter makes for a brisk drive and the chassis is more than up to the challenge, too, making it surprisingly fun, in a way many of its rivals are not.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE Mazda3 1.5 SKYACTIV-D Executive SE hatchback

Proving that form and function can be delivered in equal amounts, the Mazda3 is one of the most stylish C-segment hatchbacks on the market. And if you prefer more boot space, the saloon version is equally handsome. The sharp exterior lines continue inside, with a cabin that has a simple layout that is easy to navigate. Engine-wise, Mazda off ers a 1.5-litre diesel or petrol at the entry point to the range, while a 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel are available in higher grade versions. The automatic gearbox is good, but the manual is every bit as nice to drive, and the Mazda’s refi nement on the move partially warrants the car’s higher asking price.
