Audi A3
Buyers can have the Audi A3 in virtually any body style they like. The hatchback comes in either fi ve-door Sportback or three-door guises, and the former is the most popular due to its greater practicality. For those that like the wind in their hair, Audi off ers the A3 Cabriolet; it features seating for four and a folding fabric roof that opens in 18 seconds. The A3 Saloon remains one of Audi’s best-looking cars and has been a hit with Irish buyers who clearly still love their three-box cars. Compared to the hatchback, there’s an additional 45 litres of boot space. The A3’s interior has adequate
space up front for adults although the rear seats will be a bit tighter for some in the headroom department. Cabin quality is to the usual high Audi standard and features nice touches like an infotainment screen that automatically rises from the dashboard. A wide variety of engines are off ered, ranging from a surprisingly good 1.0-litre petrol option to a 2.0-litre diesel with varying power outputs. For the keener driver, there’s the choice of the 300hp all-wheel-drive S3, which is available in Sportback, Saloon or Cabriolet shapes, plus the crazy-fast 400hp RS 3 in either Sportback or Saloon guises.

OUR PICK OF THE RANGE A1 Sportback 1.0 TFSI S line
While we like our premium cars to be on the large side here in Ireland, there’s a growing global market for high-quality small cars and the Audi A1 tops the class thanks to its eye-catching modern looks, quality, refi nement and wide range of engine options. The A1 is off ered as a three-door hatchback or fi ve-door Sportback and there’s a very fun 231hp S1 quattro variant at the top of the range. The rest of the line-up features 1.0 and 1.4-litre TFSI petrol engines and 1.4 and 1.6-litre TDI diesels. The petrol options suit the A1 best unless you plan on very high mileage and we particularly like how the S line specifi cation looks.

Once the go-to junior executive car in the Audi range, the A4 now fi nds itself sandwiched between the A3 Saloon and stylish A5 Sportback. Those who spend a lot of time in the A4 will appreciate its well-laid out cabin design and supportive seats. Audi Connect is a worthwhile addition, and the infotainment system can seamlessly communicate with smartphones. Just as importantly, it drives well and has a capable chassis beneath it off ering the choice of front-wheel drive or quattro all-wheel drive. Among business buyers and company car users it is the diesel line-up that will hold the most appeal, and here the 2.0 TDI 150hp is the sweet spot of the off ering. Don’t discount the 1.4-litre TFSI petrol engine though, as it suits the A4 well. Audi also off ers the A4 as an estate, called the Avant, and a more rugged ‘allroad quattro’ version based on that estate.
