BMW i3
Given how dramatically futuristic the BMW design team made the i3, it has aged remarkably well, virtually unchanged since its 2013 debut. It still looks like something you could use as a prop in a fi lm set in the future. The interior no longer looks so advanced, though for 2018 it is updated to include BMW’s latest infotainment system and more upholstery choices. You sit upright with a great view over the road ahead and the electric motor’s instant torque gives the rear wheels plenty to think about. It also handles better than its skinny tyres would have you believe. Do without the range extender option if you can as it’s loud and expensive, and watch out for the sporty new i3s model.
BMW i8
Time has not dulled the appeal of BMW’s hybrid coupe, the i8. It still has the ability to stop traffi c with its swoopy styling and that’s before the scissor doors are opened. It’s low, wide and every inch the sports car. And yet, it’s in one of the lowest tax bands thanks to its emissions rating and can drive for useful periods of time on electric power alone. That is, of course, if you plug it in to charge up the battery pack regularly. On the fl ip side of the coin, the i8 is an engaging and fun- to-drive car that makes a rousing noise. Nobody else makes a car like it right now.
