SEA: ¿Cuántos miembros de América Latina están en ASIS?,
¿cuántos de ellos tiene alguna certificación? EE: Actualmente, hay más de mil miembros de ASIS en Amé- rica Latina. De éstos, casi una cuarta parte se han ganado una certificación de la junta de ASIS. Espero aumentar el interés y la participación en ASIS en la región.
SEA: ¿Las certificaciones ayudan a conseguir un mejor traba-
jo?, ¿puede darnos algún ejemplo? EE: Sí, por supuesto que la certificación es un factor para la trayectoria profesional y el progreso. Es la mezcla de los an- tecedentes, experiencia, educación, estilo de comunicación, y una serie de otros factores que realmente determinan si un candidato será el correcto para una posición específica. Las certificaciones son cada vez más mencionadas en los perfiles profesionales como una preferencia o requisito. Esta tendencia en la contratación se inició en los EUA y se ha esparcido por todo el mundo. Yo tengo ambos, el Certificado de Protección Profesional (CPP) y el CISSP. Reconozco los beneficios profe- sionales de ambos poderes.
SEA: ¿Está pensando en un proyecto nuevo para mejorar o apoyar los capítulos y certificaciones de ASIS en América La-
tina? EE: En primer lugar, me centraré en entender las necesidades de los miembros y miembros potenciales de la región. Espero ampliar la presencia y el impacto de ASIS mediante la intro- ducción de beneficios de iniciativas como la certificación y las normas y directrices, que ofrecen valiosas oportunidades profesionales para la promoción de los profesionales. El desa- fío será crear conciencia de ASIS y establecer una propuesta de valor. Para lograr esto, voy a trabajar en establecer una red fuerte y amplia de los miembros activos, comprometidos, que pueden repercutir positivamente en el avance de la profesión en América Latina.
SEA: ¿Qué mensaje o recomendaciones de seguridad podría dar a sus colegas para mejorar las prácticas de seguridad en los
países de América Latina? EE: Creo que la clave para el avance de la práctica de la seguri- dad en América Latina, así como los países de todo el mundo, es la colaboración. Los profesionales deben unirse, participar en un diálogo abierto e intercambiar experiencias, desafíos, demandas y soluciones de última instancia. Se requiere un compromiso de tiempo y esfuerzo para llevar a la profesión de gestión de seguridad a un nivel superior a nivel mundial. Le recomiendo a los profesionales a unirse y seguir participando en la comunidad de ASIS. Con más de 37 mil miembros en todo el mundo, es la más grande organización de profesionales de la seguridad. Para aquellos que no están familiarizados con ASIS, les podría sugerir una conversación con sus compañeros para aprender más sobre el valor de la red ASIS, la educación y otros beneficios. n
to this question. From a distance, I see a lot of positive de- velopments. The size and diversity of the continent makes it difficult to definitively identify specific challenges in a uniform fashion. There are so many differences. Security concerns vary across parts of the region and within a country. I am aware there are serious concerns about some security developments in the region. Overall, I remain very positive and optimistic about the region. I hope that the challenges that exist will be overcome, making way for further growth and development. In the meantime, open communication and cooperation will help us see the challenges in realistic proportions and deal with them accordingly.
SEA: How many Latin members are in ASIS? How many of
them have any Certification? EE: Currently, there are just over 1,000 ASIS members in La- tin America. Of these, nearly one quarter have earned an ASIS board certification. I look forward to increasing interest and involvement in ASIS within the region.
SEA: Do certifications help people to get a better job? Can
you give us any example? EE: Yes, absolutely, professional certification is a factor in career achievement and advancement. It is the mix of back- ground, experience, education, communication style, and a host of other factors that really determine whether a candi- date and a specific position will be a good fit. Certifications are mentioned in job profiles more and more often as prefe- rred or required. This trend in hiring began in the U.S. and has continued to spread around the world. I am both a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) and a CISSP. I have recognized professional benefits from both credentials.
SEA: Are you thinking about any new project to improve or
support ASIS Chapters and Certifications in Latin America? EE: First and foremost, I will concentrate on understanding the needs of members and potential members in the region. I look forward to broadening the presence and impact of ASIS by introducing the benefits of initiatives such as certification and standards and guidelines, which offer professionals valua- ble opportunities for career advancement. The challenge will be to build awareness of ASIS and establish a compelling va- lue proposition. To achieve this, I will work to foster a strong, expansive network of active, committed members who can positively impact the advancement of the profession in Latin America.
SEA: What message or security recommendations could you give to your colleagues to improve security practice in Latin
American Countries EE: I believe the key to the advancement of the security prac- tice within Latin America, as well as countries around the world, is collaboration. Practitioners must come together, en- gage in open dialogue, and exchange experiences, challenges, demands, and ultimately solutions. It requires a commitment of time and effort to bring the security management profes- sion to the next level globally. I strongly encourage practitioners to join and remain
involved in the ASIS community. With more than 37,000 members around the world, it is the largest, single organiza- tion of security professionals. For those who are not familiar with ASIS, I might suggest a conversation with peers to learn more about the value of the ASIS networking, education, and other benefits. n
