SUSTAINABILITY 25

swamp versus one in a desert. In the dry environment of the desert a leaf will degrade slower than the one in the warm swamp.

PC: How good a substitute is Bioglitter compared to traditional glitter for cosmetic applications? SC: Firstly, Bioglitter is every bit as durable as traditional glitter. In its natural state and stored in dry, cool conditions it has an indefinite shelf life. It’s an ideal base for a wide range of cosmetic applications whether they are dry, water-based, alcohol-based or even oil- based. From nail-art to sun screen, makeup or hair gel, Bioglitter is completely adaptable to suit many products. Bioglitter is more comfortable on the skin than traditional plastic glitter due to it being based on cellulose, which is 30 to 40 per cent softer than polyester glitter. As a result it is a far more pleasant experience to wear Bioglitter on the skin and in hair and therefore a better product for those who are sensitive to traditional glitter based cosmetics. In addition to the feel of Bioglitter the

product offers health benefits over traditional plastic glitter. Traditional polyester glitter can have high levels of heavy metals, particularly antimony. Antimony is used as a catalyst in the manufacture of polyester and traces remain in the finished plastic. Bioglitter however does not use antimony in the production process and whilst it is impossible to say something is completely free of a substance, the total antimony level in Bioglitter is <0.5ppm (parts per million), the limit of the detection method used. In other words it can be considered to have zero antimony, which means it’s a safer product to be used within cosmetics.

PC: Does Bioglitter meet all the legislative regulations for cosmetics? SC: Bioglitter is fully compliant with a whole range of regulations including the European EN No1223/2009 and FDA CFR Title 21 Cosmetic Regulations. It also meets the China – Hygienic Standard for Cosmetics, July 2007, the Japan – Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare Ordinance No 126 of July 29, 2003, the Australia – Industrial Chemicals (Notification Assessment) Act 1998 and Cosmetic Standards 2007 and finally the Korean Cosmetic Products Act (KPCA), 2000.

PC: How many products are there in the range? SC: We’ve launched Bioglitter with a choice of 90 glitters consisting of 15 vibrant cosmetic compliant colours, all available in six sizes from ultra fine 004 (100 micron) to chunky 094 (2.4 mm). It offers the same precision cut and highly reflective properties as a Cosmetic Polyester glitter

(PET) and incorporates pigments that meet the regulatory requirements.

PC: What’s the future of glitter and the Bioglitter brand? SC: There will always be a trend for sparkle in the cosmetic industry but brands using plastics in their products as opposed to the environmentally friendly alternatives is not sustainable.

Bioglitter is the first step on our journey

to providing a solution against the issues of microbead and plastic pollution and offers brands an eco-friendly product that can be used in cosmetics. It’s a massive leap forward, but we are

determined to go further. Bioglitter is 92% plastic free, but still contains some synthetic material necessary to create the reflective elements and retain the functionality in application. The minute amount of plastic

in the product however, will have minimal impact on the environment. We are determined to take Bioglitter to the next level. At the moment Bioglitter can be used within most cosmetics apart from the rinse off market in the UK, where the new microplastics legislation introduced in January this year prevents the use of any plastic containing product, no matter how little. Our next step is to evolve the Bioglitter research and technology to create a glitter which is 100% plastic free and fully compliant with the new UK rinse off legislation. Watch this space!
